When Reef Breeders LLC first began in 2011, our main products were cultured phytoplankton, rotifers, copepods, and macroalgae. Many of these products were used by us as well as our customers, however, the metal halide lights being used for our personal reef tanks had major issues; the heat and the electric bill were making it incredibly hard to keep a reef tank going during the summer. Unfortunately, the LEDs available at the time were very expensive, and out of reach of the average hobbyist. There were some cheaper LEDs, the earlier versions of the black box lights available now, but they lacked a full spectrum output or service/representation in the USA.
In 2012 we became one of the first retailers of black box LED fixtures, and developed our own spectrum through extensive research, testing, and comparing results with other hobbyists. The lights were a hit, and we continued to improve our layout and added more products, like the original photon series and jebao pumps. In 2014, we finally settled on a layout that works great for all types of corals, has a good balance of color and growth, and that looks appealing to the eye, and continue to use a variation of that layout to this day, with improvements coming whenever we find them.
In the beginning of 2016 we improved our product line with the introduction of the Photon V2, the second generation of our popular Photon LED series, and broke away from the black box LED platform of the past, offering a truly exceptional product that not only has great light output, but actually looks good in a living room, and costs far less than brands like Aqua Illumination and Ecotech. Over the years we have become known for our customer service in addition to our quality products, and our aim is first and foremost to help you, the customer, find lighting for your tank that meets your budget and grows your corals like nothing else.
We were the first company to offer 2 years of full service, USA warranty coverage on all of our lights, and we have backed this up from the beginning. Many Black Box LED retailers offer their lights for cheap, promising to keep up with the warranty as we have done over the years, then disappear after a year or so, leaving the customer behind. At Reef Breeders, we operate differently. The products we offer are truly exceptional, and even more importantly, we stand behind our warranty and honor it like no one else can.
